Know Better Learn Faster - Thao and the Get Down Stay Down
We really don’t deserve another record from Thao Nguyen already, so soon. After all, it was only last year that she tickled our ears with her delightfully upbeat, defiant We Brave Bee Stings and All. Only a year since she threw “Bag of Hammers”. A year since “Beat (Health, Life and Fire)” blasted out of our collective speakers. Yet here she is all over again in 2009 - having dropped the Nguyen but not an ounce of her charm - and ready to indie rock you all over again. And this time she brought some friends along: Andrew Bird plays violin on some tracks, Laura Viers sang some backup, and members of both The Decemberists and Blitzen Trapper lent some support on ‘additional instruments’.
And this new song - the title track on a record full of break-up songs (apparently inspired by a real life split for Ms. Nguyen) - reminds you exactly why you should feel so grateful for all of Thao’s industriousness and productivity. You can get your hands on the entire thing in a couple of weeks (Oct. 13).
