Busted Heart - Bishop Allen

POP GOES YOUR MONDAY #5

A whole lot of what I was listening to in 2005 has since gone by the wayside. Bishop Allen’s “Busted Heart”, however, remains. I’ve returned to it rather frequently over the years - for a mix or a quick pick-me-up - because it’s just so damned poppy and good. It makes me feel happy to be listening to music, its youthful, vibrant energy a palpable thing even on the crappiest of desktop speakers.

For reasons entirely unknown to me, Bishop Allen remains relatively unknown, at least outside of Music Blog Land. It’s not for lack of talent (they’ve released three stellar records and a huge handful of songs over the past four years) or lack of backing from prominent blogs (You Ain’t No Picasso gave them about as much support as humanly/bloggily possible in 2005, which is how I first came across them). For every Arcade Fire, then, I guess there is a Bishop Allen on the other end.  Which isn’t particularly fair (or even that apt a comparison, musically), but it is how it is. Those of us who still keep Bishop Allen like a tiny little pop secret in our back pockets can continue to do so, while the rest of the hipsters squeeze into their skinny jeans and chase after the next big thing.
