“I See a Darkness” - Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy

You either get a song like this, or you don’t. You either understand what he’s talking about here, or you do not. You’ve either been in such a spot yourself, or you haven’t.

And, if you have, then you know of this awful darkness, depression. You know exactly what F. Scott Fitzgerald means when he says “In a real dark night of the soul it is always three o’clock in the morning, day after day”. You realize that life can be good, so good, but you just can’t quite get there yourself. You carry a sadness with you that, sometimes, barely lets you breathe. And nobody knows. Nobody can see it, even as it pulls you down.

So you meet up with an old friend for some drinks. Someone you trust, someone who knows you, and even if she doesn’t see it, still you feel the need to tell her, to unburden yourself somehow, if only for a moment. Because your world has grown dark and you can’t see the way out.

So you tell her of the darkness around you, and of love. And how you hope that love can win out, somehow. That you can be saved by love or something like it. Because you want so badly for the universe to work that way.
