They’ll Never Take Her Love Away from Me (George Jones cover) - Elliott Smith

So much sadness in this little song and video. Elliott is clearly sad while playing it (he mentions having just broken up with his girlfriend “two days ago”) and it’s a sad old country song in general. But now both these men, Elliott and George, are no longer with us, Elliott having left us nearly ten years ago now (!) and George passing away this morning.

I don’t really believe in heaven, but if there is one, hopefully they’re up there this morning having a quiet little jam session together somewhere off in a little corner of the room.

Elliott once mentioned that, in his verison of heaven, “George Jones would be singing all the time. It would be like New York in reverse: people would be nice to each other for no reason at all, and it would smell good.”

R.I.P. George. Another good man gone.

It’s a strange time in my life, all kinds of different emotions swirling all over the place: a tremendous humbling from being able to raise so much money from strangers on the internet for BWDR, an intense and burning excitement to throw all my energy into turning it into a magazine (due in to publishers by April 15th!), a big-smile-on-my-face happiness to be seeing Josh Ritter in concert for the very first time tonight with my wife, and a deep, bone-crushing sadness at the loss of my grandfather last week, and his funeral tomorrow, at which I’m giving the main eulogy, and have been working on it, with all my heart, for the past 24 hours.

Writing and music are the two things that calm me. But I’ve been doing a lot of writing this week, and felt I needed a break even from that this morning. So I grabbed my guitar and recorded this, one of my very favorite Josh Ritter songs, in one take this morning sitting on my kitchen floor. I hope you like it, too.

My old friend David is putting out another Ola Podrida record, which is fantastic news as it’s been nearly four years since the last one (to be fair, he’s been more than busy, off scoring films like Take Shelter and David Gordon Green’s upcoming Prince Avalanche (with Explosions in the Sky!!)) and I’m already really digging the new direction they seem to be moving toward in this first track…

The record proper, Ghosts Go Blind, is due out April 30th on Western Vinyl.
